Journalists in Classrooms (JiC) is a grassroots community organization that seeks to increase news literacy among k-12 students by sending reporters into classrooms as guest speakers. The program has three overarching goals: 1.) To humanize journalists; 2.) To illuminate the relationship between a strong independent press and a functioning democracy, 3.) To arm students with the tools to distinguish fact-based storytelling from advertising or fake news. Read our full Mission Statement.
As of June 19, 2019, we’ve raised almost $6,500 through crowdfunding efforts on GoFundMe and Facebook, which we have put toward costs of materials, administrative needs and to cover our upcoming day of professional development for Sacramento teachers in August. Our fiscal agent processing donations is California Press Foundation.
We visited seven classrooms during the spring 2019 semester. We have more visits planned for the fall. Fill out this form to receive our email updates.
